Character Spotlight – Detective Lydia Adams

Regina King as Det. Lydia Adams

Character Profile
Name: Lydia Adams
Rank: Police Detective (homicide – Probably D1 or D2)
Age: Mid- to Late-30′s
Relationship: Divorced (but regrets it?), has dated but has difficulties maintain a relationship due to her job
Family: Mother who sold her house to move to France. Rumored to return in Season 2.
Indiscretions: Has feelings for her long term partner Russell, but has difficulty showing them.

Lost out on a promising relationship because she lied to him about being a cop. Oddly enough, he was OK with premarital sex, but had to talk to his preacher about the lying part.

Tends to hide the details of her work from her mother – we can assume to protect her from the grisly details.

Tends to get into it with her boss and the DA over the politics of the job. Frequently gets irritated at the politics of money spent on crimes in the rich parts of town, while the same crimes n South Central are ignored.

(OK, those aren’t really indiscretions – Lydia doesn’t really have any)

Overview: Lydia is pretty much universally liked and respected by everyone. In basic terms, she kicks ass! There is nothing better than Lydia with a shotgun!

She is smart and has a 6th sense when it comes to solving crimes, even if it means using unorthodox methods. These methods lead to some friction with her new partner in Season 2, Rene Cordero, who “hand picked” her for his assignment hoping to ride her coattails.

Her relationship with Russell, her long time partner, is something akin to a marriage. They have been together for so long, spending so much time together, that they think alike and work together like a well-oiled machine. However, with Russell’s injury after being shot, their future as a team is clearly in doubt.

Her position and reputation with the rest of the department is just as solid. She is respected and well liked by all, as evidenced by the way she is treated by other detectives and patrol officers alike.

Overall, Lydia is a compassionate woman, which she obviously has trouble dealing with at times, but at the same time that compassion gives her strength in her job making her a better detective.
