The Show

SouthLAnd is an American drama series created by Emmy Award winning writer Ann Biderman. It premiered on NBC on April 9, 2009 in ER’s Thursday time slot. On May 1, 2009, NBC announced that SouthLAnd had been renewed for a second season with an initial 13 episode order to begin airing on Friday, September 25, 2009 at 9:00 pm, one hour earlier than its original Thursday time slot.Shortly before its scheduled premiere, NBC moved the opening of its second season to October 23, 2009, citing the need to promote the show more fully. On October 8, 2009, NBC abruptly announced that the series had been canceled.

On November 2, 2009, TNT announced it has purchased the rights to SouthLAnd‘s original seven episodes, as well as six completed episodes from what would have been its second season. SouthLAnd began airing on TNT on January 12, 2010 with the pilot episode containing an additional 6.5 minutes of never before seen content, broadcast commercial-free. It has since continued with the premiere of the 6 never-before-seen episodes originally produced for NBC prior to its sudden cancellation, starting on March 2, 2010. Additionally, TNT has shown itself to be intensely dedicated to the show, with a massive media campaign dedicated to SouthLAnd both on-air and online, with many promos having been produced with 3 of the show’s stars (Michael Cudlitz, Benjamin McKenzie and Regina King), behind the scenes videos, online forums, photo galleries and a Facebook Fan Page with over 100,000 fans.

Besides airing the show each Tuesday at 10/9c with a replay 3 hours later at 1am/12am c, the show’s episodes are also available for purchase every Wednesday on iTunes (in HD and SD) after airing on TNT, where they have been known to reach the top 25 in the weekly TV Show downloads. TNT also makes the episodes available for viewing on their website via streaming video on Friday’s of the week they air, at http://www.TNT.tv/southland, although viewing is limited by country of origin for copyright reasons.

The Plot

SouthLAnd is a fast-paced, gritty and realistic look into the lives and every day events of an ensemble group of detectives and patrol officers from one precinct of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Unlike many of the oft-repeated procedural police dramas seen today like the many NCIS and Law & Order franchises, “this ain’t your normal cop show”.

Bolstered by the excellent creative team headed by Ann Biderman, the production team of John Wells and under the direction of Chris Chulack, this is like nothing you have seen before. Each episode takes us deep into the lives of the officers and detectives for 1 or 2 “primary” crimes, frequently keeping you breathless and on the edge of your seat, while at the same time you learn more and more each week about the background and inner workings of the characters as you progress through the series. By the time you get to the end of the 2nd episode, you quickly realize that these are not plastic figurines doing rote police work – these are real people, doing real jobs, with real problems: exactly like the real women and men who serve every day on the streets of Los Angeles.

Why is that? Because the team behind SouthLAnd took the time, and effort, to actually TALK to the real officers and detectives from the LAPD and get their input. The actors themselves spent time with them, to learn how things really work. They hired off-duty cops to come out and advise them while producing the show and filming the scenes. They hired the absolute best for their technical advisor (Chick Daniels and his wife) to make sure they were doing things the right way. They combine all that with some of the best cinematographers in the business, and that all results in the best television you can find.

SouthLAnd International

Distribution of SouthLAnd internationally is not huge yet, but it is growing slowly. Unfortunately, with its history of being canceled by NBC then its hiatus of production, it appears that international networks are reluctant to pick up the show and air it for only 13 episodes. Hopefully we’ll have some good news soon from TNT on its future, which will lead to more countries picking it up.
