The 6 Degrees of Southland

by on Jan.27, 2010, under Contests

Just about everyone has heard of “The 6 Degrees of Kevin Bacon” right? No? Well, go look it up on Wikipedia and come back, then – we won’t spend time on it here. :-)

What’s The Game?

For our first interactive game here on SouthlandTvFans.com, we are introducing “The 6 Degrees of SouthLAnd“!

How Does it Work?

We give you a show or an actor, and you have to make the connection between it/them and SouthLAnd. There is not necessarily one right answer, so everyone should participate with as many answers as you can think of!

Do You Have An Example?

Of course we do! Here’s a very obvious, and easy example that we would never consider using in real life, just because it’s too damned easy for everyone to answer.

Game Objective: Connect SouthLAnd to the original Beverly Hills 90210 (BH90210)

Game Answers:

1. Michael Cudlitz (Officer John Cooper) played on BH90210
2. Roxana Brusso (Detective Alicia Fernandez on 6 episodes) played Alana on 1 episode of BH90210
3. C. Thomas Howell (Officer Dewey ) was on 24. Chad Lowe was on 24 and on Melrose Place. Melrose Place was a spin-off of BH90210 with multiple stars appearing from the original show.
4. Lex Medlin (Detective Andy Williams) was on 1 episode of BH90210

If you dig deeper into the filmography of the actors I’m sure you can find many, many more connections between SouthLAnd and BH90210, but you get the idea. Any connection counts, as long as it’s within 6 degrees of connectivity. The connection can be (in terms of our game and rules) an actor, director or producer.

Special Thanks To TeenDramaWhore.com

I’m sure that others have come up with this idea before, which even Shari aka @sizzlemaker (from TeenDramaWhore.com) readily admits, but it was a quiz just like this on her site that gave me the idea to add this as a regular feature on the site. Considering the stellar cast of SouthLAnd and their illustrious careers, there should be no end to the number of games we can come up with here! One has but to look at the number of listings for the actors on IMDB to see that SouthLAnd is loaded when it comes to experienced actors. When you extend that out to 6 degrees, you have the motherload of game show resources!

This Week’s Contest

Connect SouthLAnd to the original Melrose Place

There is an easy way and some not so easy ways to do this! Let’s see how many people find the not-so-easy ways!

What Do You Win?

Everyone who participates is a winner! There is no “one” winner for this particular game, because there’s just too darned many ways that the question could be answered.

However, we will take all the submissions that are received (assuming we get enough submissions) and pick ONE at random, to receive a special prize package that consists of:

  • The respect and admiration of your fellow SouthLAnd Fans, of course!
  • A special write-up about you for the website, highlighting you as the “SouthLAnd Fan of the Week!”
  • If you don’t already have one, you get your very own username@southlandtvfans.com Gmail account with:
    • 10GB email account
    • Google Chat/GChat/Jabber IM
    • Google Sites website at http://username.southlandtvfans.com (optional)

OK, I’ll start the ball rolling with an obvious & easy one:

Michael Cudlitz (Officer John Cooper on Southland) was on Beverly Hills 90210 with Jennie Garth, who appeared on 3 episodes of the original Melrose Place.

    See, it’s easy!

This game seems like a lot of fun! Going to see how many Southland actors I can connect to Melrose Place. I already have some ideas. Wonder what the next game will be?

  • Davina Gantz

I did it! David James Elliot was in 4 episodes of Melrose Place. He starred in JAG in which Michael Cudlitz was on at least 2 episodes of. Wow that was fun, can’t wait for the next game!

    Here’s one way.

Regina King was in A Cinderella Story with Chad Michael Murray. Chad Michael Murray was in One Tree Hill, which now has Daphne Zuniga as a recurring character. Daphne Zuniga played on the original Melrose Place.

Oh wow. Actually, there are two connections with A Cinderella Story. King was in that same movie with Hilary Duff, who was in The Perfect Man with Heather Locklear. And, of course, she was in the original Melrose.

Wow, who knew that A Cinderella Story held so much power…

Ooh – Good ones! I didn’t see either one of those. Keep ‘em coming!! There’s lots more out there!

Ben McKenzie also guest-starred on one episode of JAG.

Well, we didn’t get much of a turnout for this one, but it was a good start :)

Since there were so few responses, anyone who did respond if you want a SouthlandTvFans.com email address, just contact me and let me know (assuming you don’t already have one, Davina :) ).

For the record, here’s some of the other connections I found:

Arija Bareikis was on Oz for 6 episodes, which also had Luke Perry on it. Luke Perry, of course was on BH90210. Luke Perry is also connected via Michael Cudlitz.

Michael McGrady and Regina King were both on “24″, which had Chad Lowe who appeared on Melrose Place. “240″ also had Cameron Bancoft on it, who was on a number of episodes on BH90210.

Lex Medlin (Det. Any Williams) was on “Charmed”, which of course starred Alyssa Milano, who was on 40 episodes of the original Melrose Place. Lex also, incidentally, was on an episode of the original BH90210 himself, too.

It’s a tenuous link at best, but what the heck! Kevin Alejandro has been in at least one episode of the NEW Melrose Place. Since there are original cast members on the new show, by association, that links him to the original show. :)

Kevin has also been on “JAG”, “Charmed” and “24″, tying him via those links, too.

Speaking of JAG – there is another connection there, too. Kelly Rutherford was on JAG and was a regular on Melrose Place, making her a more direct link than David James Elliot. She also has a 2nd link for Ben McKenzie, as they both appeared on “The District” as well as JAG.

    C. Thomas Howell was in the movie “Side Out”, which also starred Courtney Thorne-Smith, who was on Melrose Place. He, too, was in “24″ (was anyone from Southland NOT on 24 yet?). In another double connection, he was also in “Kindred: The Embraced” with Kelly Rutherford.

I could probably keep going on and on and find tons of more connections, but I think you get the idea now. I think the deepest we got here on any connect was maybe 4 levels/degrees? Truly, everyone in Hollywood is connected within 6 degrees!
